On Saturday morning, August 3, 2019, at 11 a.m., Korean War veterans from Muscogee and surrounding counties have an opportunity to take part in a long overdue public recognition of their military service at a certificate and peace medal presentation ceremony taking place at the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center’s Heritage Hall, located at 1775 Legacy Way in Columbus (31903). A luncheon hosted by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Atlanta will follow the presentation. This event is free and open to the public, however due to limited seating capacity, registration ends on Friday, July 19, 2019. Registration is required to receive a certificate. Korean War veterans interested in receiving a certificate may contact the GDVS Central Office via email bzeringue@vs.state.ga.us with their DD Form 214 attached, or fax their information (name, address, phone number and guest count) and DD Form 214 to 404- 656-7006.

On December 14, 1819, Alabama became the 22nd state to join the Union, making this year the 200th anniversary of Alabama’s venture into statehood. Throughout the year numerous events have been scheduled to celebrate this occasion. One such event will be held on Saturday, August 10, at 3pm E.S.T. at the Columbus Public Library in Columbus, Georgia: the Muscogee Genealogical Society, in partnership with Chattahoochee Valley Libraries and the Russell County Historical Commission, will host a talk on early Alabama by historian Mike Bunn. This event is endorsed by the Alabama200 Commission. It is free and open to the public.

As a part of the museum's ongoing Cool History educational programming, we're introducing a special guest lecture series where experts will give lectures on a variety of topics. These events are free and open to the public. All of the lectures will take place at The National Civil War Naval Museum (1002 Victory Drive). This event was made possible by generous support from W.C. Bradley Co., The Hughston Clinic, and The Georgia Humanities Council.
