The Children’s Hour is a groundbreaking play by Lillian Hellman that has been causing a stir and generating controversy since its debut in 1934. It was a controversial piece that caused the author to be blacklisted from Hollywood. Today, it remains a haunting reminder of the horrors of intolerance.
Set in a fictional New England Town in the 1930s, The Children’s Hour tells the story of an all-girls boarding school run by two women. An angry student runs away from the school, and to avoid being sent back she tells her grandmother that the two headmistresses are having a lesbian affair. The accusation proceeds to destroy the women’s careers, relationships and lives.
