Fountain City Teen Poetry Slam Semifinals

On Saturday, February 25th, twelve area high school students will compete in the 2017 Fountain City Teen Poetry Slam Semifinals. This semifinals poetry slam will see teens from across the valley area take the spotlight as they compete to represent the city at the 2017 Brave New Voices conference, an international youth poetry festival, to be held in San Francisco, CA. Convening the top young poets and spoken word artists from across the United States and internationally, Brave New Voices 2017 will feature a diverse group of young writers, trendsetters and community and cultural leaders, as well as world-class workshops led by renowned poets and artists. The semifinals will take place at Fountain City Coffee (1007 Broadway) at 4 PM on Saturday, February 25th. The top 10 poets competing in the February semifinals are: Nastonjia Wiley- Early College Academy Ajanae Rosser- Early College Academy Sophia Bartell- Northside High School Tianna George- Shaw High School Kashari Peterson- Spencer High School Saalih Watson- Carver High School Trinity Grimes- Carver High School Jacquez Wright- Spencer High School Syniah Hood- Shaw High School Neosha McCllelan- Early College Academy Jeameela Wesson- Shaw High School Demetrius Ernest- Shaw High School The Fountain City Slam is open to youth of all backgrounds as a safe house to use poetry as a means of self expression and exploration. Students have experienced the benefits of this auxiliary arts education in their intellectual, personal, and social development. Through weekly workshops, poetry slams, national/regional/local performance opportunities, and community service, we’re watching the future take shape one word at a time. The Fountain City Slam is embarking on yet another fun-filled and enriching year of self expression. The open mic/slam takes place monthly at Fountain City Coffee, 1007 Broadway, 31901. The Top 5 finishers at this semifinals bout will advance to the finals in April! We have students representing G.W. Carver High School, Shaw High School, Kendrick High School, Brookstone, Northside High School, and Early College Academy! You don't want to miss this amazing show of young talent! This committee is responsible for planning a variety of teen events at the Museum including classes, special events, and interactive scavenger hunts. Applicants must be able to commit to meet at the Museum two Thursday nights a month from May 2017 to April 2018 and should maintain a 3.0 GPA.
