Carson at 100 : The Big Read Kick - Off

Wed, Jan 25, 2017

Instructor: Hilton Als, Staff Writer and Theater Critic for The New Yorker Join us as we formally kick off our city’s celebration of the centennial birthday month of Carson McCullers. To help us understand the breadth of her continuing influence we are pleased to welcome one of the nation’s preeminent cultural critics, Hilton Als. As staff writer for The New Yorker magazine since 1994, Mr. Als has written memorably about Ms. McCullers and the unique outsider perspective she brought to her novels and short stories. He will share his opinion on McCullers’ place in America’s literary pantheon and how her first novel The Heart is a Lonely Hunter served as a catalyst for the new generation of Southern writers that followed in her footsteps. A reception will follow the program. The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. is program is presented by the Chattahoochee Valley Libraries in cooperation with the Muscogee County Library Foundation and the Muscogee County Friends of Libraries. For more information about the Big Read program, contact the Chattahoochee Valley Libraries, 706.243.2689, www.cvlga.org.
