Ace: The Eugene Bullard Story

Ace: The Eugene Bullard Story

Thu, Mar 30, 2017

In 1909, a 12-year-old black child flees his hometown of Columbus, Ga.; joins a band of Gypsies; becomes a jockey; and works his way north as a vaudeville performer and prize fighter. In New York, Eugene Bullard hops a freighter to Europe and starts earning a living in the boxing ring just as World War I breaks out. What follows is the stuff of legend: The French Foreign Legion, a glorious career as the world’s first black fighter pilot, the Croix de Guerre and post-war success as a jazz club owner in Paris. Amazingly, Bullard’s story does not end there. At the dawn of World War II, he becomes a spy against the Nazis and eventually has to escape to the U.S. In spite of his celebrated military heroism, his friendships with European royalty and business successes, Bullard returns to a segregated America and takes a job as an elevator operator at Rockefeller Center. Ace: The Eugene Bullard Story is the sweeping adventure tale of a local kid who overcomes the odds to become one of the most astonishing figures of the 20th century.
